If youâve been walking past our Lewisham studio thinking âReformer looks amazing⌠but also slightly terrifying?â - youâre not alone. Most people feel a little unsure before their first class. New space, new equipment, new movements⌠totally normal.
The good news? At Innerform, helping you feel safe, welcome and supported from the moment you walk in is kind of our whole thing. So hereâs a friendly walkthrough of what actually happens in a Foundation Reformer class - no surprises, no stress, just good vibes and great movement.
Arriving at the studio (10 minutes early is perfect)
When you arrive at 1 Lewis Grove, just above Lewis Grove Pharmacy, youâll tap in using your digital key - it lives in your phoneâs wallet, so no need to rummage through bags or pockets. The studio opens just before class and closes again between sessions, so come a little early to settle in.
Youâll find:
- A bright, calm reception area
- Lockers, showers and changing rooms
- A teacher who will always say hello and check how youâre feeling
Bring grip socks (a must for Reformer) or buy them at the studio, and thatâs it - your wonderful self does the rest.
Getting set up: weâll show you everything
Before class begins, your instructor will walk you through the reformer - what it is, how it moves, and how youâll use it. This bit is super relaxed and hands-on. Most first-timers say this is when the nerves disappear.
During setup, weâll show you:
- How the carriage moves
- What the springs do
- How to adjust the foot bar and headrest
- Where your hands and feet go for common exercises
You do not need to remember any of this. Weâll cue you every step of the way.
What a Foundation Reformer class actually feels like
Foundation is our beginner-friendly class designed to make you feel confident, clear and capable - even if youâve never done Pilates before. Movements are broken down slowly and explained simply. Itâs all about building strength, mobility, posture and core connection at your pace.
Expect:
- Clear, simple demonstrations
- Slow, controlled movements
- Lots of verbal and visual cues
- Options for when you want more challenge or more support
- A teacher who keeps a close eye on your form so you feel safe and grounded
We recommend 3 Foundation classes before moving up to Intermediate - not because you âmustâ, but because these sessions help your body learn the basics so the next level feels smooth and fun.
Will I be the only beginner?
Honestly? No - and thatâs a good thing.
Innerform is built for real people, not pro athletes. Lots of people in Foundation are brand new, returning after time off, or easing back into movement after injury or pregnancy. Youâre in very good company.
Will I be able to keep up?
Yes. 100%.
The reformer is an incredibly supportive piece of equipment - the springs help you find control, stability and strength without ever feeling forced or overwhelmed. And your instructor will offer layers throughout, so you can choose what feels right for your body today.
Youâll never be left behind. And youâll never be pushed too far.
How youâll feel after your first class
Most people leave their first Innerform class saying one or more of these things:
- âThat wasnât scary at all.â
- âI actually feel taller.â
- âWow⌠I didnât know I had those muscles.â
- âI feel calm⌠is this normal?â
- âWhen can I come back?â
Reformer has a magic way of giving you strength and ease at the same time - it activates everything without battering your joints.
